Understanding Vacation Pay
Vacation pay is a fundamental employee right that ensures workers receive compensation during their time off. Our vacation calculator helps you determine exactly how much you're entitled to receive based on your employment period and salary.
How Vacation Pay Works
Most employment laws provide for 30 days of vacation per year of service. If you've worked less than a full year, your vacation entitlement is calculated proportionally. For example, if you've worked 6 months, you're entitled to 15 days of vacation.
Vacation Bonus (1/3 Rule)
In addition to regular vacation pay, many jurisdictions require employers to pay a vacation bonus equal to one-third of the vacation pay amount. This bonus is designed to help employees cover additional expenses during their vacation period.
Selling Vacation Days
Some employment agreements allow workers to "sell" up to one-third of their vacation days back to the employer. When you sell vacation days, you receive payment for those days plus the proportional bonus, but you forfeit the time off.
Tax Implications
Vacation pay is subject to the same tax deductions as regular salary, including social security contributions and income tax. Our calculator provides an estimate of these deductions to show your net vacation pay amount.
Planning Your Vacation
Understanding your vacation pay helps you budget for time off and make informed decisions about when to take vacation. Consider factors like peak travel seasons, work schedules, and personal financial goals when planning your vacation time.
